I really enjoyed this short story. I was sad, and mad most of the time. Lucy’s mother was definitely not there for any type of moral, or emotional support. I was happy to see that the sister’s came to her aid. This was definitely a story of someone needing to come into themselves and learn about healthy relationships, it didn’t seem like she had any real healthy relationships growing up. I’ll be waiting for the second book to drop. Thanks for allowing me to enjoy this.

I’m a member of Letrise’s ARC group writing this review. Lucy’s Worth is a short, captivating tale about teenage Lucy with low self-esteem who grows into a young woman and victim of domestic abuse because she didn’t value herself. Her story speaks to teenage and adult women who do not understand how powerful and valuable they are. Lucy did get out of the relationship with help from her sister. But her mother did not provide the advice and support needed in a domestic abuse situation. I wanted to shake the **** out of her mother for being so unsupportive.

Readers of this book will experience a range of emotions at they go through this emotional journey with Lucy. I’m looking forward to seeing how Lucy fares in the next two books in the series.

Lucy’s Worth is a phenomenal short story in a new series about a young woman and some of the things that happens in her life. Some parts might be triggering to some people, but this was such a great read that is packed in a few pages. This emotional story will take you on such a ride throughout the pages. There are characters that are just not likeable in my opinion, as well as some that are so loveable, you wish you knew them in real life. An exceptional book that would be very beneficial for younger ladies to read. There are several themes throughout the story that are great life lessons. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Phenomenal job

I received a copy of the book via the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I cannot believe her mother would encourage her to stay with the man that is abusing her daughter how could she even taught herself a mother seeing some of the words that she said to Lucy. I love her older sister and her sister’s husband I can’t wait to read part two to see if Lucy confronts her mother

Will she learn to have faith in God and know that he will provide for her?  Will she forgive Roger?

Book design by Tyora Moody at Tywebbin Creations, LLC

Chapter 1- A Fresh Start

I could not believe it had been six months since I left my apartment in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with my ex-boyfriend Roger sleeping on my couch.  My life had changed in a matter of months.  I was settled into my room at Carol’s place on the southside of Chicago with her husband, Charles.  They had been caring, encouraging, and extremely helpful.

In the first three months, my sister made me enroll in this program called Thrive to complete my high school diploma in twelve weeks.  It had been challenging because I dropped out of high school my sophomore year, so I was behind in math, reading, and history. I buckled down and focused on what I needed to complete every day.  Besides, I would need a diploma if I wanted to be hired at any of the local hotel chains in Chicago.

Carol said she would help me with my homework, read all my papers, and help me study for tests. That was the perk of having a sister who was a high school teacher.  Carol was a great teacher at Booker Thomas Prep.  I got the chance to visit her class and observed for an entire week. I knew my sister would be supportive, but I did not know to what extent she was going to push me to press forward when I felt like giving up.

Carol made it a habit to invite me to Sunday service every Saturday, and I declined every other Saturday.  I did not see the purpose of going to church and what good it was going to do for me to sit and listen to a pastor preach for almost two hours.  What was I going to gain? How was that going to help me out in relationships, school, and landing a job?  I only went twice because Carol and Charles tag-teamed me into going to church and prayer service on Wednesday nights.  Prayer service was a joke.  The good man upstairs did not even know who I was, so why would God listen to me now?  I did not know where to begin praying, let alone how to do it.

After passing the required state exams for my high school diploma after three months, Thrive gave their students a graduation ceremony.  I was super excited because I got to pay for my cap and gown.  Carol insisted on making a big deal about this, so she invited our parents and my sister Mary Lou.   Carol called our mom and put her on speakerphone.

Carol asked, “Mom, so your baby girl will be graduating from Thrive Academy next Saturday at 11:30 a. m.  Will you and Daddy be able to come up?”

“I guess we can drive up next Saturday since we don’t have any plans at the moment.”

Carol rolled her eyes at her phone when Darlene, aka Mama, made that comment. If this lady knew she was on speaker, she would have a fit.

Carol said, “Mom, come on, it’s Lucy’s high school graduation. You don’t want to miss this special day for her.”

My mother had an attitude when she said, “I said, we will come up.  Stop begging; it’s not ladylike.”

Carol smiled at me before telling Darlene Mason, “I am throwing her a little celebration barbecue, so you have no choice but to come. Besides, you know daddy is not going to miss Charles’ famous ribs.”

Mama, being who she was, always had to get the last word.   Mama said, “That potato salad better not be sweet and no raisins in it like the last time.  You know what? Don’t you worry, I will just bring my famous potato salad and baked beans specialty.  Some of your in-laws know nothing about soul food cooking.”

Now, how was my mother inviting herself to bring food when she was just invited to be a guest?  How did she know Carol was not cooking or having food catered? I burst out laughing, and Mama started yelling at Carol because she didn’t know she was on speakerphone.  I heard the entire conversation, including her nasty attitude about coming.  She hung up on Carol.

Carol and I looked at one another and burst out laughing at the same time.   It was nice to know that Darlene Mason had not changed her stubborn ways.  We sat on the couch to pull ourselves together after laughing so hard at Mama.  I watched my sister go through her phone again, calling folks for this cookout.  It was hilarious to see because Carol did not know how to just leave one message; she had to leave several messages via voice mail, text, and don’t let her be friends with a person on social media. Then one would get the famous DM message that I called or I texted.  The girl is short a few screws.

Carol called Mary Lou. But she did not answer, so Carol left her a message.  Then I looked over at her, and she was texting her, too.  I said, “Carol, now you are coming off as a stalker by leaving text messages and calling when someone does not answer your phone calls.

“Yes, baby sis, I am that person. I know Mary Lou saw that I was calling her. She is sitting next to David. Or is his name Drew? I cannot remember.”

“I promise, you are a mess, Carol. That is annoying when a person calls you, leaves a voice message, and a text message.  I beg you to never do me like that.”

Looking at me and smirking, she said, “I promise that I will treat you the same way.  I don’t discriminate with my process.”

After Carol made all her calls, I went upstairs to pick out an outfit for my graduation ceremony.  I was glad I managed to save money when I was working.  I had not worked in three months since I had been here in Chicago.  I had not really had to spend any money, either, since Carol or Charles always paid for everything, I picked up when we ran out to South Brook Mall.  I felt more like their kid than the little sister.  This felt nice, but after graduation, I had a job interview lined up at one of Chicago’s top hotels downtown called Della’s Plaza.  I planned to save for a year then move out into my own little spot.  I did not want to become a burden, even though Carol and Charles say I can stay as long as I like.  I did not want to wear out my welcome.  Besides, I did not really have any privacy.  I liked to come and go as I pleased and not worry about breaking their house rules.

There was nothing like having my own place.  I had been looking online at a few places along Lakeshore Drive and a little further North of downtown since I planned to work downtown, and I was on public transportation. I liked that Chicago had multiple options of transportation between the L-trains, buses, or Metra trains to move around the city that seemed to never sleep.  Buses and trains ran all night long.

I would like to give my sister and her husband their house back so they can have some privacy.  I was sure Charles would like to walk around in his boxers, probably chase Carol around the house.  One day, I had come home early, and they were on the living room sofa all cuddled up and a deep passionate kiss.  They always stopped when I entered a room.  They were a cute couple, and I hoped someday they would start their family.

What are the Benefits of a Media Book Tour?

Every Thursday, I like to pose a question for authors and aspiring writers to offer advice from my own experience in this amazing journey as a Indie Author. What is a media book tour? What are the benefits of a media book tour? Why would you incorporate this into your Book promotional strategy? Being an indie author, you will need to get your book in front of many readers as possible because your book is not going to sell itself on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Book Blub, or your website. Do I need to repeat that statement? You will want to capitalize by borrowing other streaming or large networks listeners or viewers if it’s television by doing a media book tour media tour. The year 2020 taught many of us how to adjust to the digital world after being on lockdown. One must be able to still reach readers not only from a stance of in person, but virtual too.

What is a media book tour?

A media tour is not limited to television, book signing at book stores, and radio live appearance interviews. But, media tours have become more virtual and can include podcast, vlog, blog tours, online magazines features, print magazine features, and Influencers interviews on their platforms that all you to reach listeners around the world. If you do your homework and planning, you can maximize the free podcasts, blog interviews, and budget for those that are paid. You want to invest in being the voice for your book across various mediums (channels in media). Don’t you think you are worth it? Don’t limit yourself to book events especially if you are a new author, podcasts, bloggers, and book reviewers will become your best friend.

What are the benefits of a media book tour?

The benefits to doing a media book tour will allow you to reach a specific audience (Target audience), opens up opportunities for you to reach new readers, gives you the opportunity to network with other authors and influencers, allows you the chance to create a value in your message surrounding your book release. This allow you to build your list of media outlets to use for future releases. This allows you to develop, and nurture new relationships in media.

Why would you incorporate this type of promotional strategy?

Why would you not incorporate a media tour in your promotional strategy? This is a chance for you to grow your reach, meet new people, potentially cross over ethnicities, and borrow other outlets audiences. A planned promotional strategy will be key to you getting media exposure. It’s never too late to tweak, create, or even revamp your promotional strategy.

A media book tour for authors does not happen over night. You should plan 30-60 days in advance. I had in my head that I would do a media book tour this second time around and I still didn’t start the tour like I had envisioned in my head. I do plan for the third and fourth book release this year to improve my media book tour strategy. Meanwhile, you can learn from other authors who plan their media tours as a tool a reference and guide. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them for tips and advice.

I hope that you find the information I have provided helpful to you. Below are a just a few that I have discovered in podcasts, authors who do a feature Friday, and Blog interview that you want to connect with to get your face in front of their audience.

When you accept your obstacles

When you conquer your obstacles of Breast Cancer the Warrior in you rises so you will become unstoppable and defeat such a horrific disease. One of the biggest struggles among Black Women who opt to go through chemotherapy that is loosing their hair. We as Black women truly love our hair and the struggle is beyond accepting at times. My first time going through chemotherapy was EXTREMELY harsh and going in blind was an understatement. I wished there were more women like me to help me along the journey. However, there were not a lot of women who looked like me to give me pointers or suggestions on what to do in preparation for the effects of chemo drugs. I would learn it the hard way and it was traumatizing mentally and physically.

In September 2019, I was ashamed of how my hair came out during chemotherapy. It was very devastating to me to go through my hair turning to literally wool and sliding off my head after only one chemo treatment. The women from support group and doctor both said, “Your hair will start to thin and then fall out after the second to third treatment from the same drugs they all had been given. I was totally embarrassed the first time around it made me feel very ugly and isolated. I refused to be seen inside our outside of my home without the scarf or hat. I would not even allow family or friends to see my bald head. It took time for me to get to a place where I was comfortable with the effects of chemotherapy and my outer appearance.

There is no right or wrong way to accept your obstacles. I finally adjusted and realized what I am going through is temporary and it is just hair that will eventually grow back. The one thing I had to accept was that I could not depend on what other women who did not look like me to understand what I was going through. I did reach out to a Black doctor who specialized in dermatology care for women like me going through chemo. She helped me understand what I needed to do to care for my skin, my head, and my body. Your body becomes extremely sensitive to lotions, soaps, facial care, and hair care products.

It would be my second treatment in September of 2020, that would not be embarrassed or feel ashamed about my appearance. It is okay for you to take your time, you don’t need to impressed anyone, or get anyone’s approval on your outlook. This picture is from my second diagnosis with Breast Cancer.

I do recommend that before you undergo chemo to cut your hair down short to avoid the traumatic experience that I went through. The time that you prepare yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally will help you in the long run. I learned a lot from 2019 to 2021 and I am sharing my story as a testimony to help other Black women.

These are products referred to me to use that were very helpful while going through Chemotherapy and Radiation. You must keep your skin moisturize.

  1. Facial cleansers recommended are CerVee Hydrating cleanser, and hydrating moisturizers.
  2. Cetaphil facial cleanser and moisturizing lotion for body and face.
  3. Aveeno Lotions and body wash
  4. Dove for sensitive skin body wash
  5. Shea Butter was a Big help used on my entire body including my head.
  6. Dickerson Witch Hazel facial toner
